What would a school look like if you developed the curriculum? (ClICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD ASSIGNMENT)

You have been hired to create the learning lessons for “Global Citizen Middle School” a new Kalamazoo Public School’s 6th – 8th grade building.  The school’s goal is to create students who are responsible, active and knowledgeable global citizens.

Your task is to come up with the big topics that will be studied during their 9 units.  Each of your units must fit the school’s definition of a Global Issue which means it must be:

  1. Significant – Likely to have an influence or effect on many.
  2. Trans-national or trans-boundary.
  3. Persistent or long-acting.
  4. Interconnected with other big issues.

Please use the following links to begin exploring possible topics for units of study (additional sources may be needed, please use “Google Scholar”):

Basic planning is due by the end of today and the district has supplied this template below to begin your pacing guide.  Please fill in, print and hand it into your boss (Mr. McCullough) by the end of the day.

This is a professional document and thus your boss expects that you use complete sentences that are of a professional language.   Also, this document will be shared with co-workers who are collaborating on other versions of “Global Citizens Middle School” curriculum.

Today we utilized our home work to categorize and find leverage for Global Issues.  We also defined a Global Issue as a problem which must be:

  1. Significant – Likely to have an influence or effect on many.
  2. Trans-national or trans-boundary.
  3. Persistent or long-acting.
  4. Interconnected with other big issues.

M/Tues we went over the basics of our class and framed why we bother to learn about Global Issues.  We worked together in groups to flush out ideas like “What are issues around the world” “Why should I care” and “What can we do here at Loy Norrix”.
